7 Principles for Life, Business and Your Career

7 Principles for Life, Business and Your Career

Kwanzaa is a celebration of the first harvest and is based on principle and practice.  It starts the day after Christmas (Today) and ends on January 1.  Each day is represented by a different principle.

Here are 7 ways you can leverage the principles of Kwanzaa for your life, business and career:
  1. Umoja (Unity) - No man of woman is an island.  Build a community were members can benefit from your experience while you benefit from theirs.
  2. Kujichagulia (Self Determination) - Decide how you want to live your life, run your business or manage your career.  It is easy to go along the path that others suggest, but moving forward pull a Robert Frost, "I took the road less traveled by, and that has made all the difference," or Jay-Z "Just know I chose my own faith, I came to the fork in the road and went straight."
  3. Ujima (Collective work and responsibility) - Focus on interdependency (We can get more done together, then we could ever accomplish on our own)
  4. Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics) - Partner to share resources and mutually benefit from the fruits of your collective labor.
  5. Nia (Purpose) - Remember why you do what you do and surround yourself with folks who can support your cause.  Don't know what your purpose is?  Pay attention to  which conversations and activities give you goose bumps.  If it gets you excited you may be on to something.
  6. Kuumba (Creativity) - To quote Einstein, "You can never solve a problem on the level on which it was created;"  enough said.
  7. Imani (Faith) - The other 6 principles will go to waste if we don't believe we can accomplish the goals or task at hand.  Faith allows us to move beyond our comfort zones and to create goals based on our imaginations and not our past.
How can you apply these principles to your life, business or career?
