I Bet You Are Wondering How I Did it

I Bet You Are Wondering How I Did it

"Thank you" to all those who have purchased a copy of my book, "Move the Crowd: 30 Days of Hip Hop Affirmations to Change Your Life." We are steadily moving towards our first 1000 books sold (We are at 800 after selling 300 last week). The world is slowly beginning to realize that my book is not just about hip-hop, but how you can use the lyrics to help elevate yourself personally and professionally. I'm loving it! Recently, "Move the Crowd" made the book review list of The Source Magazine: The Bible of Hip Hop.

Many have asked me, "How did you get your book in The Source?" I thought I would answer the question in this article. This recent achievement is made possible due to what I have been exposed to. My business coach, Andre Taylor, has always amazed me over the past 10 years as I've seen him build a business from scratch, create audio programs and recently write a book, "You Can Still Win" (check it out on Amazon.com or get the audio book on itunes). This brother was on Fox news, and recently was invited to speak at an Al Sharpton event in Harlem on how people can still win in this economy. Every time I've asked the question, "Andre, how did you make that happen?" the answer has been the same, "I asked." I'm glad I asked him how he did it. Thanks Andre.

"I asked" is the answer to how I got my book in The Source. More interesting is how I found out I made the cut. Several months ago, I asked The Source to review my book. I followed up several times but never got any response.

I have visions of contributing articles to The Source so I decided to subscribe to their publication. I did not want to wait 6 weeks before I got my first issue so I decided to go to my local 7-eleven to pick up the latest issue. When I went to their magazine rack, I could not find The Source. On a second scan I was able to find the magazine hidden behind another magazine. I purchased a copy and took it home where I decided to take a quick scan of the pages. As I went through I came to their Review section which covers games, movies and books. If I'm honest with you, I'll tell you my mindset was, "Let me see what books they are reviewing that are not mine." To my surprise, I turned to page 98 and there was "Move the Crowd." My hand quickly went to my mouth, "Oh, snap. Yeah baby!" Followed by looking up and saying, "Thank you."

Looking at my Source experience I would suggest that you ask, follow-up and keep an eye out. Lastly, be thankful. I'm writing a thank you letter to The Source once I'm done with this article.
