Happy New Year!
I wanted to wish you a Happy 2009. I hope you brought the new year in the way you wished. I was fortunate enough to spend the holidays back in my hometown of Brooklyn, NY. Being back home gave me an opportunity to catch up with a number of friends who I have not seen in over 10 years. I made the time to spend some quality 1-on-1 time with each of them. It was good to be with familiar people i've known for so long.
Besides enjoy the comfort of the past, I also did a couple of new things that I have never done before. My wife and I celebrated new year's at a lounge in NYC with a couple of friends and a whole lot of other people who were not friends. Traditionally for New Year's we are in someone's home with people we know.
I also spent a good amount of time working on some foundation work for 2009. It felt good to revisit/clarify values, focus visions and put together a couple of short term goals to get after what I want in 2009. Looking at my values I came up with the word CHAPS to represent the different elements of my values: Clarity, Creativity, Harmony, Accomplishment, Positive, Preparation, Possibilities and Structure.
The process I used to clarify my values:
- Review peak moments from the past and present. Times when you felt like you were in what athletes refer to as "in the zone." What are some of the recurring themes that show up?
- Review how you are known to the outside world. Ask a couple of people in your personal and professional life how they would describe you. What they see as your strengths and areas of opportunity.
- What really bugs you in your current situation, in the world. Usually it's a sign of a value being stepped on. What is the opposite of what you really bugs you? It may reveal a value.
- What can't you help but be?
- Once you get your values listed, define them in your own term, not by what Websters or Dictionary.com tells us. For example, my values Creativity = Bow tie / my own twist, Positive = glass 1/2 full and still pouring in.
So now that you have that figured out; What do you want in 2009? What values do you want to make sure that you are honoring more in 2009? You will have to start and stop this process allowing time for it to soak in and new information to be developed. Be patient with yourself but don't quit on the process.
